Working in ECEC

Jenny Sanderson

Jenny Sanderson, Executive Director
Four Feathers Inc. Aboriginal Head Start Program
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Jenny Sanderson built the Aboriginal Head Start Program at Four Feathers Inc. from the ground up. She got the funding, dealt with renovations and regulatory requirements, and developed centre and staff policies. Today, 40 Aboriginal children are in this early intervention program funded by Health Canada.

When Jenny came on board in 1996, she had an ECE III certificate and experience as a child care worker and centre director. She has continued to pursue training and professional development related to her work.

Jenny hires and supervises staff, and ensures the program meets government regulations. She makes sure the centre operates with full enrolment and within budget. She is responsible for staff training, regular contact with parents, parent workshops and formal reporting to Health Canada. She also networks with schools and social and health agencies to meet the needs of the children in the program.

Jenny says she loves working in a program that promotes the children’s Aboriginal heritage. It supports their efforts to be successful in school and become life-long learners. Most important, it helps them build their pride and self-esteem.
